THECONSCIENCE NG reports that The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has generated well over ₦10 billion in revenue, surpassing its projected potential and signaling a powerful shift in its national relevance, according to Postmaster General and CEO, Tola Odeyemi.

Speaking on The Beam with Soonest Nathaniel, Odeyemi revealed that the agency exceeded the ₦10 billion annual benchmark last year — a significant milestone for an institution often regarded as a legacy relic.

“We actually surpassed ten billion last year, and that was just by digitizing some of our processes and plugin leakages,” she stated, as the discussion focused on the topic: “Beyond Stamps: The Reinvention of Nigeria’s Postal Power.”

“I think for the Nigerian Postal Service, 10 billion naira is a scratch,” she buttressed, adding that the major services of NIPOST can generate much more for the nation, even as operations within the organization have been drastically optimized to ensure optimal service delivery that yields more revenue.

Odeyemi highlighted several transformation strategies — including deeper integration with Nigeria’s fast-growing e-commerce space, expanding digital services like PostMoni, and leveraging the National Addressing System to boost financial inclusion and security.

Notably, she explained that if the Nigeria Police adopts NIPOST’s addressing framework, the Force can better combat crimes and improve emergency responses.

“If we are able to say that this person, or this entity is tied to a particular location, then policing is easier, crime prevention is easier, planning is easier and even things like the census is easier,” she asserted.

Beyond the curbing of crimes, Odeyemi however stressed that the addressing system helps with things like drone deliveries and even the delivery of other government services right to the doorsteps of the citizens.

On financial sustainability, the Postmaster General stated that NIPOST is actively positioning itself to become fully self-reliant within five years through new revenue streams and improved service reliability.

Addressing service concerns, Odeyemi acknowledged past issues around stolen or mishandled parcels but assured the public that upgraded logistics systems and stricter security protocols are already in place.

When asked about restoring public trust, she emphasized the importance of rebranding NIPOST as a 21st-century civic institution that has great relevance for the future of the nation’s digital economy.

“In five to ten years, I would love to see NIPOST as an institution of national pride, in that we trust it, it is reliable and we need it” she said. Adding, “a NIPOST that is completely digitized but still accessible to underserved areas, rural areas, as well as the urban areas”.

According to the Postmaster General, she would like to see NIPOST become a national institution that is a platform for inclusive economic prosperity, one that is trustworthy and serves effectively.
