LASTMA Deploys Drones, AI to Slash Emergency Response Time on Lagos Roads

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has unveiled a sweeping digital overhaul of its emergency response architecture, deploying drones, artificial intelligence and GPS-enabled patrol systems to tackle road accidents and gridlock across Lagos.

The agency says the integration of advanced technologies is already cutting response times and strengthening safety management in Africa’s most populous city, where traffic congestion and delayed emergency interventions have long posed risks to motorists and commuters.

General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the transformation marks a decisive shift from conventional traffic control methods to a data-driven, real-time response framework.

“Every minute saved in emergency response is invaluable. The deployment of intelligent systems has empowered our operatives to respond with unprecedented speed, precision and professional dexterity,” Bakare-Oki stated.

At the heart of the reform is a centralised command-and-control hub that synchronises field operations with live data feeds. The system integrates drones and Traffic Management System (TMS) cameras for aerial and roadside surveillance, alongside AI-powered incident detection platforms that trigger instant alerts to emergency teams.

Patrol vehicles and troopers are now equipped with GPS trackers to optimise deployment routes, while bodycams and mobile data terminals enhance accountability and operational coordination among zonal commanders.

The authority has also introduced predictive data analytics to map high-risk corridors and accident hotspots, enabling pre-emptive interventions before incidents escalate. Officials say this proactive strategy is helping to reduce secondary crashes, speed up debris clearance and facilitate swift medical response.

Bakare-Oki stressed that the technological drive will be sustained through continued investment, inter-agency collaboration and personnel training.

“We shall continue to invest in technological innovation, capacity development and inter-agency collaboration to ensure Lagos roads remain safer, more orderly and optimally responsive to emergencies,” he said.

LASTMA urged motorists and residents to comply strictly with traffic regulations, noting that public cooperation remains essential to maximising the benefits of the modernisation programme and safeguarding lives on Lagos roads.
