Kwara LGAs Close Cattle Markets Over Worsening Insecurity
THECONSCIENCEng reports that all Kara (cattle) markets across the Kwara South Senatorial District have been ordered shut with immediate effect, following fresh security threats in the region.
This directive was jointly issued by the Forum of Seven Local Government Chairmen in the district, who noted that the decision, though difficult, was necessary to safeguard lives and property.
In a statement personally signed by the chairmen of Ifelodun, Isin, Irepodun, Ekiti, Oke-Ero, Offa, and Oyun LGAs, the council bosses revealed that the move follows intelligence reports and extensive stakeholder consultations.
“While the invading criminals have been operationally decimated in recent weeks, clean-up operations by military and hybrid operatives are still ongoing,” the statement read.
The council leaders stressed that all Kara markets are to remain closed from Friday, September 19, 2025, until further notice, while other produce markets must cease activities by 6:00 p.m. on market days.
They maintained that the closure is a proactive security measure, not only to prevent a resurgence of criminal activities but to protect traders, commuters, and residents alike.
“The decision will be reviewed periodically, and the markets will be reopened once a safe and secure environment is assured,” the statement added.
While acknowledging the economic implications, the chairmen emphasized the need to prioritise long-term safety over short-term inconvenience.
