The Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area following a deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba community that left several people dead.

The curfew, which takes effect from midnight on March 29 to April 1, 2026, was announced in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap.

According to the government, the measure became necessary after a “tragic security incident” at Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba on Sunday, which resulted in casualties and heightened tension in the area.

“The Plateau State Government, in conjunction with security agencies, wishes to inform the general public of the imposition of a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unprovoked,” and assured residents that security agencies had been mobilised to restore order and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers arrived on motorbikes, prompting calls for a ban on motorcycle movement in the area with strict enforcement.

Meanwhile, the University of Jos (UNIJOS) has suspended all examinations earlier scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, citing security concerns.

In a statement issued on Monday, the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, said the decision followed Sunday’s attack in the locality.

“In view of the late evening fatal attacks by unknown gunmen on residents of Angwan Rukuba — an area that hosts many staff and students of the University — and the consequential tensions generated in and around the area, the Vice-Chancellor has directed that all examinations scheduled for Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31, 2026, be postponed,” the statement said.

Madugu added that the examinations would be rescheduled, while urging members of the university community to remain vigilant and exercise caution in their movements on and off campus.

“For emphasis, members are strongly advised to avoid going out very early in the morning and to report any sign of a breach of public peace to the University Security Division,” he said.

The university management also noted that it is liaising with relevant security agencies and monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of staff and students.
