PROFESSOR JOSEPH IFEANYICHUKWU IKECHEBELU: Giant Strides of an Academic and Medical Colossus
By Bolaji Israel
Professor Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikechebelu stands tall in Nigeria’s medical and academic landscape — an erudite professor of obstetrics and gynaecology, a renowned fertility expert, a pioneering minimal access surgeon, an accomplished administrator, and above all, a man of grace, excellence, and deep faith.
An alumnus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Professor Ikechebelu earned his Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons and later undertook specialised training at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada. Since joining the University of Nigeria, he has risen through the ranks to become a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2008 — a position from which he has influenced generations of medical practitioners.
With over 200 scholarly publications in reputable national and international journals, Professor Ikechebelu’s research footprint spans fertility medicine and gynaecological endoscopy. He was ranked among Scopus’ top 500 scholars in Nigeria (2020–2023) and listed among the top 10 academics at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka in 2024 based on citation and publication impact.

A visionary academic leader, he distinguished himself as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (2012–2014) and Director of Academic Planning (2019–2021) — earning the nickname “Digital Dean” for spearheading groundbreaking digital reforms that transformed medical education and academic processes at the University.
Professor Ikechebelu’s pioneering contributions in clinical practice are equally profound. He introduced Minimal Access Surgery (Laparoscopy) at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, in 2006, and initiated Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services in 2003. In 2010, he established the first Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) centre in Anambra State, leading to the birth of the first IVF baby in the state — fondly called “Baby Joseph” — on August 6, 2011.
Through the Life Institute for Endoscopy, which he founded in 2010, Professor Ikechebelu has trained over 400 doctors — including gynaecologists, surgeons, anaesthesiologists, and medical officers — as well as 50 peri-operative nurses in the field of minimal access surgery. He also founded the Always Life Fountain Initiative (ALFI) in 2012, an outreach platform through which he has provided scholarships to students, empowered widows, and supported indigent families.
His professional affiliations cut across prestigious global and regional bodies, including the International College of Surgeons, the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons, the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. He is also a life member of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) and the West African College of Surgeons (WACS), as well as the pioneer president of the Association of Gynaecological Endoscopy Surgeons (AGES) Nigeria.
An accomplished editor and thought leader, Professor Ikechebelu serves as Editor-in-Chief of both the Journal of HIV and Human Reproduction and the Nigerian Journal of Surgical Sciences. Between 2019 and 2023, he chaired the Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at WACS, where he also served as Chief Examiner for the College’s Primary, Membership, and Fellowship examinations.
In recognition of his excellence, the NUC-NOUN Virtual Institute for Capacity Building in Higher Education certified him in 2021 as an Accreditor for Programme and Institutional Accreditation — a testament to his continued impact on higher education standards in Nigeria.
Behind the accolades lies a man of deep humility — a devoted teacher, mentor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist whose life’s work continues to transform medical education, fertility practice, and human capacity development across Africa.
