Police Arrest ‘Fake’ Doctor As Patient Dies During Abortion
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that detectives from the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a suspected fake medical practitioner, identified as Sunday Okon Akpan, over the death of a 35-year-old woman, Blessing Sunday Etim, following a botched abortion.
According to the spokesperson for the command, DSP Timfon John, the tragic incident occurred at the Full Life Medical Centre (FLMC) in Ikot Obio Odongo, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, where the deceased reportedly worked under the suspect.
John revealed that police operatives launched an investigation after receiving a distress report from the victim’s mother, who had raised concerns over her daughter’s whereabouts.
“The arrest was made on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at approximately 09:30 hours. It followed a report by a woman who stated that her daughter, Blessing Sunday Etim, had gone to work at Full Life Medical Centre but did not return home,” John said during a press briefing on Thursday.
She explained that a co-tenant at the victim’s residence raised an alarm after allegedly seeing the suspect attempting to dump the body of the deceased in her room. Upon being spotted, the suspect dropped the body and fled the scene.
“When officers arrived, they discovered the lifeless body of the woman, with a premature foetus protruding from her private part—indicating a failed abortion,” John said.
Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect, who was traced to Afaha Offiong village in Nsit Ibom LGA. Preliminary findings revealed that Akpan is neither a licensed doctor nor a qualified nurse, but a community health practitioner running the unregistered medical facility.
“It is believed that the suspect used the facility to conduct illegal medical procedures, including abortions,” the police spokesperson added. “The health centre has since been found deserted. The body of the deceased has been deposited in the morgue for preservation and autopsy.”
DSP John confirmed that investigations are ongoing and promised that further details will be disclosed as they emerge.
