Tragedy As ‘Mad Man’ Overpowers, Stabs Civil Defence Officer To death In Ondo
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that tragedy struck on Thursday at Oba-Ile in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State when a man suspected to be mentally unstable allegedly stabbed an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to death.
According to information gathered, the incident occurred after the deceased officer, whose identity had not been released at the time of filing this report, attempted to restrain the suspect who had been causing unrest in the neighbourhood.
Eyewitnesses said the suspect’s mother had sought help from two NSCDC operatives to control her son, who was said to have battled severe mental health challenges for many years.
One witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that the situation escalated when one of the officers attempted to chain the man to prevent further disturbance.
In the struggle that followed, the suspect reportedly overpowered the officer, grabbed his knife, and stabbed him repeatedly.
“The boy suddenly became violent. He struggled with the officer, took his knife, and stabbed him several times. It was shocking because the officer was armed, yet he couldn’t stop the attack,” the witness recounted.
The fatally wounded officer was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival due to the severity of the injuries.
The NSCDC spokesman in Ondo State, Daniel Aidamenbor, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation, explaining that the officers had been attempting to restrain the suspect so he could be taken to a psychiatric facility for treatment.
He described the occurrence as a deeply tragic development that unfolded during efforts to protect both the suspect and the community.
