NBA Faults Abuja Judge For Ordering Sowore’s Lawyer to Kneel In Court
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly criticised a Federal High Court judge in Abuja for ordering a lawyer to kneel during court proceedings, describing the action as inconsistent with judicial ethics and professional standards.
The incident reportedly involved Justice Mohammed Umar, who was presiding over a case between the Department of State Services (DSS) and activist Omoyele Sowore, currently facing prosecution over alleged cyber-related offences.
During the proceedings, defence counsel, Marshall Abubakar, was cautioned by the judge over his tone while addressing the court. In a moment that has since sparked widespread concern, the judge allegedly directed the lawyer to “come out and kneel down” over what was described as unruly behaviour.

The situation was eventually defused following interventions by other lawyers present in court, after which proceedings were adjourned.

Reacting to the development, NBA President, Afam Osigwe, in an official statement, expressed deep concern, warning that such conduct raises serious questions about adherence to due process and courtroom decorum.
“The courtroom is a temple of justice, governed by law, procedure, and decorum,” the statement read, stressing that judicial authority must always be exercised within the bounds of established legal principles.
While acknowledging that judges possess the authority to maintain order in court, the NBA maintained that compelling any individual to kneel is not a recognised sanction under Nigerian law and falls below the expected standards of judicial conduct.
The association further emphasised that although courts have the power to punish contempt, such powers must be exercised through clearly defined legal procedures that uphold fairness and respect for human dignity.
It also urged legal practitioners to maintain professionalism at all times, noting that zealous advocacy must not come at the expense of respect for the court.
Reaffirming its commitment to the rule of law, the NBA stated that it would take necessary steps, including engaging relevant authorities, to safeguard the integrity and ethical standards of Nigeria’s justice system.
