After 48 Years In Canada, Old Professor Returns To Nigeria Broke, Alone

A deeply troubling story has emerged of a Nigerian professor who returned to his homeland after nearly fifty years in Canada, only to face the harsh realities of loneliness and financial despair.

The elderly academic, whose name remains undisclosed, shared his heart-wrenching story during a Facebook Live session hosted by Ibadan-based cleric, Agbala Gabriel.

The professor left Nigeria in the 1970s, full of ambition, determined to build a career in academia in Canada. He poured his life into his work, dedicating decades to his studies and his students. Yet, his return home is far from the triumphant homecoming one might expect after such a long and successful life abroad. Instead, he arrived in Nigeria alone, without a wife—believing he had no children—and with little to no financial security. His circumstances are a far cry from the success so often associated with decades of hard work in the West.

During the live broadcast, the professor bared his soul, revealing the profound grief and hardship he has faced since the death of his wife many years ago. Her passing left him emotionally shattered, and in his later years, the burden of financial instability became too much to bear.

His painful tale of isolation and sorrow struck a deep chord with viewers, sparking widespread discussion about the hidden struggles of elderly Nigerians who return home after spending years abroad, only to find themselves alone and adrift.

However, in a subsequent update, Cleric Agbala Gabriel clarified that the professor does, in fact, have children, though his age has clearly taken a toll on his memory. Gabriel reassured the public that efforts were already underway to provide him with much-needed support, with his family now actively involved in helping him. “We’re working on his case. He does have children—age has just affected his memory. We will bring him live again soon,” Gabriel promised.

This professor’s heart-rending story serves as a stark reminder of how the later years of life can unfold in ways we never anticipate. It also underscores the critical importance of family and community support, especially for those who, after decades of striving abroad, return to a homeland that now feels foreign and uncertain.

The emotionalemotional toll of his experience reveals a sobering truth: no one, no matter their achievements, is immune to the loneliness and vulnerability that can come with age and the passage of time.
