THECONSCIENCE NG reports that Nigeria has been hit with a double national tragedy, as the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, passed away at the age of 91, just hours after the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari was announced.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, confirmed the monarch’s passing in a statement issued from Abeokuta, the state capital, on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland. Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria at large,” Governor Abiodun said.

The governor described the monarch’s death as a deepening of national sorrow, coming on the same day the country was mourning former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died at the age of 82 in a London hospital.

“It is indeed a double loss for our nation that Oba Adetona joined his ancestors on the same day as former President Muhammadu Buhari,” Abiodun lamented.

Oba Sikiru Adetona ascended the throne in 1960 and ruled for an extraordinary 65 years, earning widespread admiration for his visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to development, and cultural preservation.

“He was a remarkable royal father, whose reign marked a transformative era in Ijebuland. Oba Adetona was a beacon of unity and progress, whose legacy will endure for generations,” the governor added.

Governor Abiodun also praised the monarch’s impactful contributions to education, healthcare, and infrastructure, noting his pivotal role in elevating Ijebuland as a center of commerce and cultural pride.

“Under his reign, the Ojude Oba festival grew into a globally recognized cultural celebration, while Ijebuland witnessed significant advancements in public welfare and economic development,” he said.

As tributes continue to pour in, the governor called on Nigerians to reflect on the monarch’s legacy and honor his lifelong dedication to the service of his people.

“Let us celebrate the extraordinary life of Oba Adetona. His wisdom, kindness, and steadfast commitment to the betterment of society will forever remain in our hearts. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
