Global Crackdown Tightens as UN Security Council Revises Sanctions on 22 Taliban Officials
The United Nations UN Security Council has announced amendments to 22 entries on its sanctions list under Resolution 1988 (2011), which targets individuals associated with the Taliban.
According to a statement released on 10 March 2026, the Security Council’s sanctions committee updated information relating to individuals already listed under the measures that include asset freezes, travel bans and arms embargoes. The measures are part of international efforts to curb terrorism and maintain global security.
The updates affect several individuals who previously held key positions under the Taliban regime between 1996 and 2001. Among those whose entries were amended are Mohammad Hassan Akhund, Abdul Kabir Mohammad Jan, Abdul Latif Mansur, Fazl Mohammad Mazloom and Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Others on the amended list include Amir Khan Muttaqi, Abdul Salam Hanafi, Abdul Baqi Haqqani, Din Mohammad Hanif, and Sirajuddin Haqqani.
The Security Council noted that the amendments mainly involve updates to personal details such as names, aliases, passport information and other identifying records to improve the accuracy of the sanctions database.
These sanctions were adopted under Chapter VII of the UN Charter and require all UN member states to enforce restrictions against listed individuals, including freezing assets, preventing international travel and blocking arms transfers.
The United Nations said the 1988 Sanctions List is regularly updated based on information received from member states and international or regional organizations.
The updated sanctions list and additional details are available on the official website of the United Nations Security Council
