Zamfara Assembly Declares Minority Leader’s Seat Vacant
The Zamfara State House of Assembly has declared the seat of Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South Constituency, vacant due to his prolonged absence from legislative activities.
The decision was reached on Tuesday during a plenary session following a motion presented by the Majority Leader, Hon. Bello Muhammad Mazawajje Tsafe, and seconded by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Adamu Aliyu Gummi.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary of Zamfara State House of Assembly. Bello Kurya.
Kurya said Kagara had attended only 21 out of 180 sitting days, a clear violation of the Nigerian Constitution and the Assembly’s standing rules, which require lawmakers to participate consistently in legislative proceedings.
members, including Hon. Kabiru Mikailu Dangulbi (Maru South), Hon. Rilwanu Marafa Nagambo Anka (Anka), Hon. Ibrahim Garba Liman Fegin Mahe (Gusau II), and Hon. Adamu Aliyu Gummi (Gummi II), supported the motion, emphasizing the need to uphold legislative integrity and discipline.
“However, Hon. Halliru Abdullahi Kuturu (Zurmi East) urged the House to explore alternative disciplinary measures.
“Despite his appeal, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki, announced the Assembly’s unanimous decision to declare the seat vacant, citing Sections 101 and 109(2) of the Nigerian Constitution as the basis for the action.
“The Assembly had previously constituted several committees to engage with Hon. Kagara, but all attempts to resolve the matter amicably failed,” the statement read.
In a related development, the Assembly has mandated its Committees on Agriculture and Justice to investigate the operations and current status of the Zamfara State Fertilizer Blending Plant.
The committees are expected to submit their findings within one month for further legislative action.
