Why I Slept With My Housemaid — Man Tells Court

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that a contractor, Prince Uzo Nwosu, has told a Customary Court of the Federal Capital Territory, sitting in Takushara, Abuja, why he engaged in a sexual relationship with his family’s housemaid—an allegation now at the centre of a heated marital dispute with his wife, Rebecca Erebi Nwosu.

Testifying before a three-member panel chaired by Hadiza Attah, Nwosu claimed he became involved with the maid because he was allegedly “sex-starved” by his wife. He insisted the relationship was consensual and denied accusations of rape. According to him, Rebecca agreed to intimacy only when she wanted to conceive, and after the birth of their second child, she allegedly denied him sex until she eventually left their home.

Nwosu, who appeared as the fourth prosecution witness, further alleged that his wife had a habit of dismissing their housemaids over minor issues, claiming she fired 18 domestic staff within four years, often accusing them of having affairs with him. He added that she sent them away without arranging replacements, and also accused her of leaving their young children in the care of estate security guards when going out at night.

Responding to questions on the alleged rape, Nwosu maintained that his affair with the maid, identified as Mercy, was voluntary. He said he even considered marrying her because she cared well for his children, adding that as a prince from Ohuhu in Umuahia North, Abia State, his customs permit polygamy. He also denied claims that one of his children has autism, saying the child only has delayed speech, which he said runs in his family.

In his petition FCT/JD/CC/TAK/CV/09/2025, Nwosu asked the court to dissolve the marriage and grant custody of their two young children to his parents, with Rebecca receiving visitation rights. He argued that the union, contracted in May 2021, had “broken down irretrievably” and noted that they had been separated for more than a year. He further accused Rebecca of “clubbing and promiscuity” and of denying him access to the children.

Rebecca, however, strongly refuted his claims. She denied marrying Nwosu under Igbo customary law, stating that their union was conducted under Ijaw native law and custom in Bayelsa on 30 April 2021 and later blessed in church. She described herself as a dutiful wife and accused Nwosu of concealing his “true character,” which she said also contributed to the collapse of his previous marriage.

She alleged that the marriage fell apart after Nwosu raped and sexually assaulted their housemaid in July 2024, an incident that, according to her, brought shame and forced their separation after intervention from both families. Rebecca claimed Nwosu confessed to the offence but avoided prosecution because the victim lacked financial means and was allegedly paid off by his family.

Rebecca further accused him of endangering their children, alleging he is a chain smoker who smokes in their presence, and saying their son once picked up a cigarette butt in imitation. She denied being involved in clubbing or promiscuity, insisting she always allowed him access to the children and maintained that she is a hardworking, responsible mother.

She also accused Nwosu and his family of attempting to control her life, saying he forced her to abandon her successful clothing business, leaving her financially dependent. Rebecca is seeking full custody, child support, health insurance, and the return of the ₦60,000 bride price as required under Ijaw custom. She also agreed that the marriage should be dissolved.

The court has fixed 20 November 2025 for ruling on the matter.
