A humanitarian and female advocacy NGO, Care for Women and Girl Child International (CWGC), was on Sunday launched in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. CWGC is a non-governmental organisation whose mission is to deliver transformative support and empowerment through essential resources and tailored interventions for women and girl children. A major highlight of the launch, held at the Idi-Ape area of Ibadan, was the donation of food items and medical supplements to 1,500 beneficiaries, mainly grassroots residents of Ibadan North East Local Government Area of the state. Speaking to newsmen shortly after the launch, the Founder of Care for Women and Girl Child International (CWGC), Alhaja Sekinat Tolanikawo Adelakun-Akande (ASTAA), stated that the organisation is committed to protecting, empowering, and uplifting women and girls. She added that the core objective of the organisation is driven by a simple but powerful belief, that when women and girls are safe, educated, and supported, families thrive and communities grow stronger. “We focus on advocacy, education, capacity building, and social support—addressing issues such as gender-based violence, access to education, health awareness, and economic empowerment. Through partnerships, community engagement, and evidence-based programmes, we work to give women and girls a voice and the opportunity to reach their full potential. “Today’s engagement is part of our continued commitment to raising awareness and mobilising collective action,” she said. Explaining the rationale behind the choice of location for the launch, she noted that although the organisation has an international scope, she chose to begin from her immediate community before expanding to the rest of Ibadan, Oyo State, and eventually the entire country and beyond. “As an experienced project manager, I describe this as my minimum viable product. I am starting in my ward, Ibadan North East Local Government, Ward 11, at my mother’s house here, then at my father’s family in Ward 12 of Lagelu Local Government. From here, we can progress to other areas to cover Ibadan and beyond,” she added. Speaking on the possibility of political ambition, she said that while she has no immediate intention to run for political office, the support and goodwill she receives from people, especially due to her continued grassroots contributions, could someday inspire her to serve in that capacity and contest in the 2027 elections. The organisation also called on government agencies, the private sector, civil society organisations, and the mass media to partner with CWGC in building a society where every woman and every girl is valued, protected, and empowered.

By THECONSCIENCEng

The Professor Risikat Dauda-led management of the Distance Learning Institute of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, has congratulated its record-breaking overall best graduating student, Mr. Sobowale Babatunde.

Shattering stereotypes and proving that age is just a number, Mr. Sobowale Babatunde achieved the feat for the 2021/2022 academic session at the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) of the institution.

At 61 years old, Mr. Sobowale has not only defied expectations but set a shining example for students of all ages with his remarkable academic achievement.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Secretary of the Institute, Oke Olagoke, on Wednesday.

According to the statement, “The Distance Learning Institute management, led by the Director, Prof. Risikat Dauda, staff, and entire students, extend their heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Sobowale, Babatunde, on his outstanding achievement, which will continue to inspire generations of students to pursue their dreams, especially as UNILAG marks its 54th convocation ceremony.”

“Hailing from Ogun State, Mr. Sobowale’s journey to academic excellence began in 2016 when he enrolled in the Department of Management Sciences (B.Sc. Business Administration programme) at the Institute. Throughout his studies, he exhibited unwavering dedication and a thirst for knowledge, consistently scoring an impressive cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.84. This outstanding performance not only showcases his intellectual prowess but also serves as a powerful message of hope and inspiration for individuals who may have doubted their abilities due to age or other perceived limitations.

“Mr. Sobowale’s academic achievements extend beyond his current degree. He holds qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management, a Higher Diploma in Business Management Technology, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management respectively. This diverse range of expertise, coupled with his professional experience in public service, paints a picture of a highly accomplished individual with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

“However, those who know Mr. Sobowale beyond his academic achievements describe him as an unassuming, articulate, and outgoing individual with a gentle, serious, and hardworking nature. His dedication to his studies, coupled with his loving and disciplined personality, truly embodies the spirit of excellence that DLI strives to cultivate,” it noted.

These include the offering of flexible, accessible, quality, affordable, and cost-effective degree programmes; encouraging and supporting learners; monitoring retention; developing capacity-building processes; engaging in research and development of open distance practices; and contributing extensively to the national and international development of education for all.
