Democrats-led United States House as earlier planned delivered articles of impeachment against President Trump to the Senate on Wednesday.
The House also approved seven Democrats to serve as prosecutors in the third trial of a sitting U.S. president in the country’s 244 years history.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi signed the articles at a ceremony in the Capitol, following the announcement of a team of managers led by two trusted lieutenants, Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler.
The managers then presented them to the chamber led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who has repeatedly shown support for the embattled President.
The case borders on the allegation that Trump tried to take advantage of a White House meeting and military aid, sought by Ukraine to combat Russian military aggression, to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into launching an investigation on former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, as well as a probe of an unfounded theory that Kyiv conspired with Democrats to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
President Trump had denied all allegations and condemned the process as lacking substance and a witch hunt. The Senate is expected to hold the trial in a few days time while it is yet unclear whether witnesses will be called as being requested by Democrats.
Trump is expected to get a clean bill as votes may go along party lines at a Republican-dominated Senate, as the nation prepares for elections this year.
