Tension In Kano: DPO Killed, Police Station Torched In Youth-Led Attack
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that palpable tension has gripped Rano Local Government Area of Kano State following a violent incident that claimed the lives of a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and another individual.
According to a press release from the Kano State Police Command on Monday, the unrest began on Sunday evening after a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, was arrested for alleged reckless and dangerous riding. Authorities believe he was under the influence of intoxicants at the time.
While in custody, Musa reportedly developed health complications and was taken to Rano General Hospital. He died the following morning, May 26, 2025, around 6:00 a.m., while receiving treatment, according to SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Police Public Relations Officer.
News of Musa’s death sparked outrage in the community. A group of angry youths attacked the Rano Police Division, setting parts of the station on fire and vandalizing multiple vehicles.
“The attackers looted and torched sections of the station, burned two vehicles, damaged ten others, and inflicted serious injuries on the DPO,” SP Kiyawa said.
The injured DPO—whose identity was not disclosed—was rushed to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital but later died from his wounds.
In response, police arrested 27 individuals suspected of involvement in the attack. Authorities have since restored order in the area.
Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident and has visited the Emir of Rano, His Highness Mohammed Isah Umar, to offer condolences.
“We are committed to uncovering both the immediate and underlying causes of this tragic event,” CP Bakori said. “All those involved, whether directly or indirectly, will be brought to justice.”
The police have called for calm, urging residents to refrain from acts of retaliation or vigilantism.
“Let us allow the investigation to run its full course,” SP Kiyawa appealed, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and public safety.
