Change this headline: Taiwan Strengthens Security With US-Made Battle Tanks

Taiwan has received 38 advanced M1A2 Abrams battle tanks from the United States as part of its ongoing effort to enhance military capabilities amid increasing tensions with China.

The tanks, which are the first of 108 ordered in 2019, were delivered late Sunday and are now stationed at an army training base in Hsinchu, near the capital, Taipei.

This delivery marks the first new tanks to be added to Taiwan’s military in three decades. The M1A2 Abrams are considered some of the most advanced and heavy tanks globally and will replace outdated models in Taiwan’s current tank force, which includes Taiwan-made CM 11 Brave Tigers and US-made M60A3s.

Taiwan’s reliance on US arms has grown as a means to deter potential Chinese aggression, with China maintaining its stance on reunification, potentially by force.

The arrival of these tanks is part of a larger order totaling more than $1.2 billion, with further shipments expected by 2025 and 2026.

Despite logistical delays, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and global arms supply challenges, Taiwan continues to increase its defense budget, with a record $19 billion allocated for 2024.

This development comes amidst rising military pressures from China, which regularly conducts military drills around Taiwan, including large-scale naval exercises in the region. Taiwan’s strategic military buildup, including the acquisition of the Abrams tanks, is aimed at strengthening its defense against any potential threats.
