Speaker Pushes Six-year Single Tenure For President, Governors
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the Chairman of the Nigerian Conference of Speakers and Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has advocated for a six-year single tenure for elected officials, stating that it is now essential for Nigeria’s development.
Ogundoyin made this known on Tuesday during the July edition of the ‘Guest of the Month’, a monthly live programme hosted by the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) in Ibadan.
He argued that the current four-year tenure has contributed to policy inconsistency and a lack of continuity in governance, thereby hindering meaningful progress across the country.
“The bane of Nigeria’s development is its kind of politics,” Ogundoyin said. “With only four years, officeholders spend a significant portion of their term trying to understand the system and engaging in political maneuvering, leaving little time for actual governance. Good policies often die with the administration that introduced them, as successors rarely continue existing plans.”
He stressed that a six-year single term would help reduce political distractions, allow for better long-term planning, and give leaders more time to implement meaningful policies.
When asked about his stance on the six-year single tenure proposal previously canvassed by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Ogundoyin responded: “Governor Makinde doesn’t make baseless statements. He speaks with intention and facts. With a six-year single tenure, there would be fewer distractions, improved governance, and more emphasis on policies rather than politics. We should be focusing on sustainable governance, not just ‘stomach infrastructure’.”
