Some Women Exploit Sexual Harassment Claims For Personal Gain — Activist
Umma Getso, the 2019 vice presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), has claimed that some women in politics falsely accuse men of sexual harassment for personal or political gain.
Getso made the remarks during an interview on Monday, where she also called for justice in the ongoing case between Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
She said, “Let there be justice. Women should be treated with respect everywhere they are. However, I must say this to many women: I’ve worked with a variety of men, both nationally and internationally, from all walks of life.”
Addressing the issue of sexual harassment, Getso emphasized, “There is a need to redefine what sexual harassment truly means. We’ve seen instances around the world—not just in Nigeria—where some women take advantage of their gender and make such accusations for personal reasons.”
She further questioned the credibility of certain claims, stating, “If a woman in a prominent position, such as a senator, claims to have been sexually harassed by a man, it might make men who support their wives’ involvement in politics hesitant.”
