There’s A Popular Thing I Can Never Do For Success – Singer, DeJon

Jonathan Ogbonna, known by his stage name DeJon, is not your typical artist. Born into a family of four children, with an elder brother and sister, as well as two younger sisters, DeJon’s upbringing laid the foundation for his passion and drive in the music industry.

A graduate of Geology from the University of Ibadan, he embarked on a journey that would shape his career and redefine his understanding of success.

From a young age, music played a significant role in DeJon’s life. Influenced by his mother, who was set to release an album during his childhood, he found himself drawn to the melodies and rhythms that filled his home. It was during his time in primary school that he discovered his talent for playing the keyboard, using his skills to contribute to the music ministry at his church.

However, it wasn’t until his university days that he took the leap to write his first song, encouraged by a friend and roommate named Toba. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of DeJon’s musical journey.

When asked about the origin of his stage name, DeJon explained that it was a combination of his nickname, Jon, and his mother’s endearing term for him, Dee Jon or Dee Joe.

After meeting Spellz, a prominent figure in the music industry, and working together, Spellz’s wife, Dije Hadiza, suggested that DeJon adopt the name as his stage name. To his surprise, DeJon discovered that the name DeJon had a deeper meaning, translating to “God is gracious,” often found among African Americans. Inspired by the significance of the name, DeJon embraced it as his own.

Since the early days of his musical career, DeJon has encountered both triumphs and challenges. While the path hasn’t been easy, he emphasizes that it has been a catalyst for growth and self-discovery. Each experience has shaped his perspective on life and the music industry, allowing him to evolve as an artist.

As an alternative singer, DeJon draws inspiration from various sources. His mother, despite never officially releasing or publishing her songs, has been a significant influence on his musical journey. Other notable inspirations include artists such as Jon Bellion, John Legend, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber.

Additionally, DeJon finds inspiration from homegrown Nigerian talent, including Rema, WizKid, Buju, Davido, and Burna Boy.

When asked about his greatest inspiration of all time, DeJon speaks fondly of Spellz, an industry heavyweight with whom he has had the privilege of working closely.

Beyond their studio sessions, Spellz has become a mentor figure, guiding DeJon on his path to success in the music industry. Spellz’s insights have taught DeJon that music extends beyond the confines of the studio, emphasizing the importance of an artist’s journey beyond their performances.

Finding inspiration for his music is a process that DeJon approaches with a sense of openness and curiosity. Whether it’s taking a walk, sleeping and receiving melodies in his dreams, driving in nature, or simply indulging in everyday activities like eating and showering, DeJon embraces the world around him to tap into his creative flow.

One unforgettable moment in DeJon’s life showcases his selflessness and willingness to protect those he cares about. During his time in school, DeJon took the punishment for his younger sister, as he didn’t want her to face disciplinary action. As a prefect, he understood the rules prohibited public punishment of a fellow prefect, so he volunteered to take the punishment in her place, ultimately strengthening the bond between him and his sister.

In a world where success often seems synonymous with compromise, DeJon remains steadfast in his principles. When asked if he would resort to seeking a sugar mommy to advance his career, DeJon firmly declines.

He believes that true success in the music industry comes from talent, authentic craftsmanship, and a solid support system. He is determined to develop his craft and create music that resonates with people without compromising his values.

For DeJon, success in the entertainment industry is defined by the freedom to express himself authentically, without sacrificing his personality or succumbing to external pressures. He envisions a future where he can connect with an audience that embraces his music and message, allowing him to remain true to himself throughout his artistic journey.

When reflecting upon the challenges faced by young artists, DeJon emphasizes the importance of defining success on their terms. While talent and a strong management team can contribute to an artist’s market value, there is no one-size-fits-all formula for success.

Some artists may possess all the necessary ingredients for success but struggle to make their mark, while others may achieve success against all odds. The journey to success is as unique as the individuals embarking on it.

Currently, DeJon is working on several songs with Spellz, and he is eager to share.
