BREAKING! Foremost Economist, Sanusi Lamido II Reinstated As Kano Emir

Outspoken economist and former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano, according to reliable sources.

This decision followed the Kano State House of Assembly’s resolution to dethrone the current Emir and also dismantle the four new Emirates in the State established under a controversial 2019 law.

Muhammad Sanusi II, was dethroned as Emir of Kano in northwest Nigeria in 2020, after falling out with then Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

This news platform has it on good authority that Sanusi, formerly known as SLS, but now as Khalifa Sanusi II has been reinstated, and is expected in Kano on Friday.

Reliable sources who spoke to THECONSCIENCEng said Sanusi’s return is being championed by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the godfather of Kano politics who remains a political foe of Ganduje, the national chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The outspoken economist currently known by the religious title Khalifa Sanusi II, is a spiritual leader in the Tijaniyyah of the Sufi Order in Nigeria.

He is known for his bluntness and uncompromising attitude which have put him on war paths with several leaders and government officials in the past including former President Jonathan whom he had criticised publicly. He was known as a general irritant to those in power.

PresidentialAccording to credible inside sources, “So certainly with the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, the thing to is wait for the Governor to assent to it.”

The then restructuring of the Kano Emirate is seen as a political manoeuvre to diminish the influence of then Emir Sanusi II, a vocal critic of the former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje administration.

The creation of the new emirates fragmented the authority of the old Kano Emirate Council, diluting its power and influence.

On Tuesday, 21 May 2024, the Kano State House of Assembly resolved to amend the 2019 law through which Sanusi was deposed.

The law, known as the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law, was promulgated in 2019 by the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje administration when the governor had a publicised feud with the emir

Meanwhile, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, who sponsored the Amendment Bill, shortly after Thursday’s session, revealed to journalists that, “the bill has been sent to the governor for assent, now there is no longer an active Emir in Kano in all the five Emirates; Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye.

The law now provides the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king.”
