MSA Reacts to JUSUN Indefinite Strike in Lagos

The Movement for A Socialist Alternative (MSA) has intervened in the ongoing nationwide indefinite strike action of JUSUN, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria over independence of the Judiciary at the High Court Complex, Ikeja.

It will be recalled that while the ultimatum for the strike action lapsed during the Easter holiday, the enforcement of the strike action commenced yesterday, 6th April, 2021.

The duo of Ayo Ademiluyi and Fidel Davynovich , Members of the Secretariat of the Movement for A Socialist Alternative (MSA) were joined in the intervention by Mr. Adesina Ogunlana , the Chairman of the Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association (RAMINBA) , a nucleus of radical and left elements in the Nigerian Bar Association, where Ayo Ademiluyi also acts as the Secretary.

The JUSUN picket line was at the entrance of the High Court Complex, Ikeja, having shut down the ever busy Complex.

Mr. Ogunlana, Chairman of the Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association (RAMINBA) in his solidarity expressed the fact that demand of the struggle for independence of the Judiciary is welcome and should be embraced by the Nigerian Bar Association.

He submitted that as against the position of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association ,Mr. Olumide Akpata that the “timing” of the strike is wrong, he stated that RAMINBA express solidarity with the strike and call on NBA branches to organise Solidarity actions with JUSUN.

In his Solidarity speech , Ayo Ademiluyi, Member of the Secretariat of the Movement for A Socialist Alternative (MSA) and the Secretary of the Radical Agenda Movement in the Nigerian Bar Association (RAMINBA) respectively express total solidarity of the two organisations and called for regular Congresses of the Union to give updates to Members as from time to time with press conferences to explain the demands of the strike to lawyers , litigants and the general public.

He also raised the need for the leaderships of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress to unify the wave of strikes of Resident Doctors, ShopRite workers, Judicial workers and lately, Polytechnic workers with a Joint Day of Action towards a 2 Day Warning General Strike and Mass Protests , latest by May Day.

He submitted that where the central labour leaderships refuse to provide concerted leadership to the growing strike movements in the country , the striking unions should work towards a Working Class Action Summit to discuss the possibility of a Joint Day of Action.

The Chairman of JUSUN Lagos Branch in his response appreciated the solidarity of the organisations and called for support of the Organisations in achieving the aims of the struggle. He expressed the fact that what they are fighting for is a just demand which is for the improvement of the conditions of the Judiciary.

MSA Comrades held discussions with the JUSUN Lagos Branch leadership , introducing the Inaugural Edition of the SOLIDARITY. The leadership agreed to subscribe to the next editions of the paper as well as Solidarity Message in the upcoming May Day edition of the Paper.

Discussions on what are the next line of initiatives were raised.

They plan to organise zoom meeting when the modalities are resolve and also to sustain their ongoing media campaign and continue enforcing the strike in other quarters, if their demands are not yet meant. A copy of MSA paper was sold for Solidarity Price of N1, 000.

For MSA, the growing wave of strike actions confirm the historical position that the working class occupy and the power they wield amidst the developing volatile situation of separatists tensions and divisive crisis.

The strike actions show the bold step taken by the striking workers and indication of a working class revolt from below.

The MSA will continue interventions in these strikes with the aim of helping to link them together into a rolling united struggle and solidarity movement of striking workers and agitating working class youth , combining direct industrial and indirect political methods to alter society fundamentally in the interests of the working masses and the power by striving to put in power a revolutionary working people’s government.
