THECONSCIENCE NG reports that R Kelly’s legal team is claiming the imprisoned singer suffered a near-fatal overdose last week after being given an excessive dose of medication by prison staff.

In a court filing submitted on June 17 and obtained by USA TODAY, Kelly’s attorneys allege he was hospitalized after receiving what they called an “overdose quantity” of medication on June 12—far beyond his usual dosage for anxiety and sleep disorders. The incident allegedly occurred while Kelly was being held in solitary confinement at the Federal Correctional Institute in Butner, North Carolina.

The 58-year-old singer, whose full name is Robert Kelly, was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham the following day, where he was hospitalized for two days. His attorneys say he was removed from the hospital against doctors’ advice before a planned surgery to address a serious blood clot issue.

Kelly has been serving a 30-year sentence since 2022 for federal convictions in New York related to racketeering and sex trafficking. In 2023, he was sentenced to an additional 20 years for child pornography and enticement in Chicago. One year of the Chicago sentence is to be served consecutively.

The new court motion outlines events leading up to the alleged overdose. On June 10, Kelly was reportedly placed in solitary confinement “against his will,” just days after his legal team filed an emergency motion seeking his release, claiming there was a plot by three prison officials to have him killed by another inmate.

By the early morning of June 13, Kelly reportedly felt faint and dizzy before collapsing in his cell. According to the filing, he crawled to the door before losing consciousness. Prison medical staff were unable to treat him, prompting his transfer to Duke University Hospital via ambulance.

His lawyers say the hospital intended to keep Kelly for two weeks to perform surgery for a pulmonary clot. Instead, armed officers arrived within an hour and forcibly returned him to solitary confinement, despite the hospital’s advice.

Attorney Beau Brindley described the situation as urgent, warning that Kelly’s life is at risk.

“For those who responded with skepticism about whether Bureau of Prisons officers would engage in a plot to kill R. Kelly, those prison officials have now removed all doubt,” Brindley said in the June 17 statement. “They want R. Kelly dead before the crimes committed against him in his cases are exposed.”

Brindley reiterated his plea to former President Donald Trump, calling for a pardon and urgent intervention.

“The courts do not move as quickly as the efforts to kill this man. President Trump may be the only person who can save the life of R. Kelly,” he stated.

The Bureau of Prisons has declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation.

Federal prosecutors, however, have strongly pushed back on Kelly’s claims. In their response, they dismissed the motion as “fanciful” and “theatrical,” criticizing it for procedural errors and arguing that it undermines the severity of the crimes and trauma experienced by Kelly’s victims.

They also warned of the precedent a release could set, saying it could give “every convicted murderer, rapist, and terrorist a newfound shot at freedom”

Kelly’s legal battles continue as he serves his time in federal prison.
