Peter Obi Advises FG on Tax Reforms
Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has urged the federal government to hold a public hearing before enacting the proposed tax reform bills.
In a statement released on Monday, Obi emphasized the significance of tax reform, noting that while it is a critical issue, it should be approached with transparency and public involvement.
“However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate. A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully,” he said.
The former Anambra State Governor stressed that a public hearing would foster trust and inclusivity, ensuring that policymaking reflects the needs and perspectives of all citizens.
“Matters of this magnitude require extensive deliberation and careful consideration—they should never be rushed,” he stated. “Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs. Such public hearing would also enable the broadest spectrum of public opinion to be reflectedin public policy.”
Obi further noted the importance of balancing the government’s revenue goals with the broader implications of tax reforms.
He cautioned against focusing solely on the fiscal benefits while neglecting their impact on the nation’s overall welfare.
