Nigerian Man Arrested In Canada Over $610K Love Scam
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that Investigation of Peel Regional Police (PRP) have arrested and charged a Canada-based Nigerian identified as Chimezie Nwabueze, over an alleged connection with an online romance scam that defrauded two victims of over $600,000.
According to a statement on the PRP’s website, Nwabueze had lured his victims into believing they were engaged in legitimate romantic relationships after connecting with them through an online dating platform, between June 2021 and July 2023.
The suspect claimed to own an oil rig in the Middle East,hence fabricating urgent financial needs while promising to pay back and scheduling an eventual meeting.
Nwabueze was however arrested on Monday,April 28, and charged on two counts of fraud over $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime, uttering forged documents, laundering proceeds of crime, participation in criminal organization activity and instructing the commission of an offence for a crminal organization.
He was however released on an undertaking and will appear later before the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
