Lagos LGA Elections: LASIEC Sets Stage for Free, Fair Vote on July 12

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) says all arrangements have been concluded for credible, free, and fair Lagos LGA elections on Saturday, July 12, 2025 across the state.

Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), Chairman of LASIEC, made this clear during a press briefing in Yaba, Lagos, asserting, “We are extremely prepared as humanly possible for the elections on Saturday.”

With 13,325 polling units and 7,060,195 registered voters, the election will see residents in twenty Local Government Areas and thirty-seven Local Council Development Areas electing their leaders.

“There are fifty-seven chairmanship positions available and 376 councillors—with fifteen political parties actively participating,” she noted, highlighting the scale of the electoral process.

Okikiolu-Ighile emphasized the readiness election materials, stating, “All sensitive and non-sensitive materials are ready, with some already deployed and stored securely to facilitate smooth movement on election day.”

In preparation, LASIEC has engaged in extensive outreach, organizing meetings, advocacy events, and sensitization programs across various communities, including those for persons with disabilities. “We partnered with relevant organizations for voter education and held stakeholder meetings across all zones,” she added.

Addressing the electoral integrity, she affirmed, “We are following all electoral laws and guidelines. We have taken all necessary steps in line with our mandate from the electoral act.” She promised enhanced security measures, saying, “There will be positive differences in the forthcoming election regarding security arrangements. We are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair election devoid of harassment or violence.”

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile urged candidates to behave democratically, stating, “We are non-partisan and ready to deal with anyone who contravenes the law.”

She also called on voters to be active participants, warning, “Silence is dangerous. Speak out with your vote. Don’t stay at home. Make your voice count for the future of your children and posterity.”

Earlier, the state Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh announced a total restriction of movement till 3pm on Saturday across the state except for essential services like press, security and healthcare for the Lagos LGA Elections.
