Labour Party Chieftain Speaks On 2027 Presidential Ticket For Peter Obi
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Abayomi Arabambi, has declared that former presidential candidate Peter Obi will not be the party’s flagbearer in the 2027 general elections.
This statement follows Obi’s recent endorsement of African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidates during the August by-elections. Although Obi has not formally joined the ADC, he urged his supporters to back its candidates, citing the absence of LP candidates in those races.
However, the Labour Party disputed Obi’s claim, describing it as false and a violation of party principles.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Lunchtime Politics on Monday, Arabambi stated that the party is capable of moving forward without Obi. He argued that the party’s 2023 electoral momentum was fueled more by public frustration over the Buhari administration and the #EndSARS movement than by Obi’s personal appeal.
“We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi said.
“Our plan is to get rid of elements who represent political extremism. We don’t want them in the Labour Party. Now that they’re talking about ADC, we wish them well. Obi has one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC.”
Arabambi challenged Obi to officially announce his departure from the party.
“If he believes he can secure seven million votes on his own in 2027, we urge him to declare his exit from Labour Party,” he said.
He reiterated that Obi’s emergence in 2023 was more circumstantial than influential.
“The momentum in 2023 wasn’t because of Peter Obi, but because of EndSARS. Obi simply capitalized on the country’s exhaustion with the Buhari administration and used Labour Party as a platform of convenience.”
