Governor Okowa hosts General Irefin, new Army chief

 

Delta State Governor Okowa has held a strategic meeting with the new Army Chief, General Irefin on enhancing security in the oil rich state.

The meeting which was to receive and welcome the new General Officer Commanding of the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General J.O Irefin, was also used to discuss salient security issues and map out effective strategies for enhanced security in the state, TheConscience reports.

In a statement, Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa said, “As we continue to work to foster unity, peace and security across Delta State, earlier today, it was a pleasure to receive the new General Officer Commanding the 6th Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General J.O Irefin, at the Executive Council Chambers at the Government House.

“During our interaction, I emphasized that we will continue to work towards increasing the collaboration between the armed forces and my administration to make both our state and the South-South region more secure.

“As he continues on in this new role, I wish the new GOC of the 6th Division, Major General Irefin, all the best and assure him that we will remain partners in our respective mandates to serve and protect the people of Delta State.”

Governor Okowa was re-elected as the governor of Delta State on May 29, 2019 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, the leading opposition Party in the country.

On July 1, 2020, Governor Okowa and his wife, Edith both tested positive for the deadly Covid19 virus after their daughter tested positive for the virus which made the entire family go into 14-day self-isolation.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Okowa, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, confirmed the news through a press statement noting that the two heads of the first family in the state have begun necessary treatment and further isolation.
