FG Approves NCE , Degrees In FCOEs

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the Federal Government has approved a dual mandate for Federal Colleges of Education (FCOEs), allowing them to award both the National Certificate in Education (NCE) and Bachelor’s Degrees in Education.

The development stems from a revised Act governing FCOEs, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023, aimed at strengthening teacher education in Nigeria.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, made the announcement during a strategic meeting with staff unions and college management. He said the move was part of broader reforms to reposition the teaching profession and align teacher training with global standards.

Alausa stressed the importance of changing public perceptions about teaching, calling for mutual respect among teachers, students, parents, and academics. He affirmed that implementation of the new policy would begin in the 2025/2026 academic session, starting in September 2025.

In a statement posted on his official X handle, the Minister wrote:

“We are moving forward with the revised Act… This Act, approved by Mr President in 2023, now permits our colleges to award both the NCE and a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.”

He further noted the vital role of teachers in national development, adding that the Ministry is working closely with the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to ensure a smooth rollout.
