EFCC Denounces ADC’s “Unprovoked Attack” Over Corruption Investigations

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has strongly condemned what it describes as an “unprovoked attack” by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) regarding its handling of cases involving politically exposed persons.

In a statement issued to the press, EFCC Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede criticized the ADC for politicizing ongoing corruption probes and attempting to shield certain individuals from accountability.

Reacting to the ADC’s claims that recent EFCC summonses to opposition figures were politically motivated and based on outdated cases, Olukoyede called the allegations “self-serving, diversionary, and an attempt to whitewash individuals with corruption questions to answer.”

“There is no time limit on criminal investigations. Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There are no sacred cows or partisan considerations in our work,” Olukoyede stated. “Nothing will make an innocent person answer any charge from the EFCC.”

He emphasized that the Commission’s investigations cut across party lines, noting that both serving and former governors, ministers, and key figures in the ruling party are also under investigation.

“If I am not condemned for investigating prominent figures within the ruling party, I should not be condemned for probing opposition members,” he added.

Olukoyede cited court records showing that politicians from various political backgrounds are currently facing trial for financial crimes. He also revealed that several serving governors, regardless of party affiliation, remain on the EFCC’s radar.

“We will not be blackmailed into disclosing ongoing investigations, no matter the provocation,” he said.

While acknowledging the ADC’s assertion that the EFCC belongs to the Nigerian people and is taxpayer-funded, Olukoyede argued that this is precisely why the Commission must operate impartially and without interference.

He urged political parties to allow the EFCC to perform its constitutional duties without distraction, warning that attempts to politicize its activities only serve to undermine the anti-corruption fight.

“Those being defended know they have matters to answer. The only immunity from investigation is accountability and probity,” he said.

“Well-meaning Nigerians should ignore politically motivated statements designed to heat up the polity and distract from the looting of public funds.”
