Lagos government demolishes illegal buildings in Lekki areas of the state
Lagos Demolition Exercise

The Lagos State government has commenced demolition exercise on the Lekki Regional Road, causing panic and fear in the region, TheConscience reports.

The state has said the move was is in line with plans to step up its urban renewal projects and redefine the state architecture with a more befitting modern outlook and an indication of government’s eagerness and preparedness to execute the projects speedily.

Affected buildings in the exercise are structures that are obstructing the approved Right of Ways and hindering development projects in the state axis.

This development was announced by the State government on Monday, at a meeting with various stakeholders in Alausa, CBD, Ikeja.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako said the demolition exercise became unavoidable to enable speedy execution of project and overall developments.

“Ministry had taken its time to go through the due process of stakeholder-engagements and the service of statutory notices to owners of affected structures as expressed in the newspaper publication of June 16, 2020,” Salako noted.

He advised concerned property owners and occupiers of identified structures to cooperate during the demolition exercise by vacating the approved Right of Way of the Regional Road.

Salako insisted the Lekki Regional Road is a major road being embarked upon by the Lagos State Government to facilitate the transportation and socio-economic development in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S agenda.
