Nigerian Navy Extends Operation Delta Sanity After Busting 122 Illegal Refineries
The Nigerian Navy has announced the extension of Operation Delta Sanity for an additional 90 days.
A statement signed by Commodore A. ADAMS-ALIU, its Director of Information, on Wednesday in Lagos, said, “The operation, which was launched in January 2024 to combat oil theft and related crimes, has been successful in recovering stolen products, dismantling illegal refining sites, and arresting suspects.”
It added: “Since the extension of the operation in April 2024, a total of 22 suspects have been arrested, and 122 illegal refinery sites have been deactivated. Significant quantities of crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil have been seized and properly handled. In addition, 57 wooden boats, 45 dugout pits, and 65 storage tanks used in illegal activities have been deactivated, and six vessels have been arrested. Furthermore, various items and equipment used in the construction of illegal refineries have been confiscated.
“The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, approved the extension of Operation Delta Sanity for another 90 days, effective from July 10, 2024. The announcement was made by Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, Chief of Training and Operations, onboard Nigerian Navy Ship OKPABANA at Onne, Rivers State. Rear Admiral Ferreira represented Vice Admiral Ogalla during the announcement.”
