Court Sentences Singer, Osinachi’s husband To death
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that nearly three years after the death of popular gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme delivered the verdict on Monday, finding Peter Nwachukwu guilty of culpable homicide in connection with his wife’s death on April 8, 2022. The judge ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Nwachukwu was arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on a 23-count charge. The charges included culpable homicide punishable by death, spousal battery, cruelty to children, and criminal intimidation.
During the trial, the prosecution presented 17 witnesses—including two of the late singer’s children—and submitted 25 documentary exhibits. In his defense, Nwachukwu testified in person, called four witnesses, and tendered four exhibits.
While Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, appealed for leniency before sentencing, the lead prosecutor, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to apply the full weight of the law.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Peter Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1 (culpable homicide). In addition, he received the following sentences:
Two years’ imprisonment each for counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18
Six months’ imprisonment for count 10
Three years’ imprisonment for count 11
Fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for counts 6 and 7, respectively
The sentences are to run concurrently where applicable.
