THECONSCIENCE NG reports that MultiChoice, the operator of DStv and GOtv pay-TV services, is grappling with massive loss of subscriber and legal battles, prompting the company to reduce the price of its pay-TV decoder by 50% in a bid to attract customers back.

The price has been slashed from N20,000 to N10,000, in a bid to stem the tide.

The firm is currently locked in legal disputes with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) regarding various alleged infractions. The Chairman and CEO of MultiChoice, Adewunmi Ogunsanya and John Ugbe respectively, are scheduled to appear in court in October.

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the price reduction comes on the heels of the company losing 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025. MultiChoice has stated that the initiative is in response to the “noticeable economic impact on the everyday lives of Nigerians.”

The company has announced that its new promotion will offer customers a free upgrade to the next DStv package tier when they pay their current subscription in full between June 16 and July 31, 2025.

“By repositioning itself as a platform for daily value, DStv aims to encourage content discovery across a wide array of genres, including movies, drama, children’s programming, and news,” a company spokesperson stated. The promotional campaign titled “We’ve Got You” is targeted at encouraging customers.

In a statement, MultiChoice confirmed that the upgrade would be automatically applied to all active and returning subscribers who renew their subscriptions during the promotional period. “This means more channels, more shows, and more reasons to tune in every day,” the company added.

John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria, remarked that the initiative represents the company’s commitment to rewarding customer loyalty and providing enhanced value. “We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day. The ‘We’ve Got You’ campaign is about making premium content more accessible and demonstrating that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has scheduled October 7, 2025, for the arraignment of MultiChoice’s Chairman, Adewunmi Ogunsanya, and Managing Director, John Ugbe, over allegations of breaching the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018. Justice James Omotosho set the date after the FCCPC’s counsel, Chizenum Nsitem, requested an adjournment due to the absence of the defendants in court.
