Agege LG chairman Resigns, Obasa’s Son To Finally Take Over
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that Mr. Tunde Azeez Disco has officially stepped down as the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Lagos State, citing persistent health issues as the reason for his resignation.
According to reports, the former chairman submitted his resignation letter to the Agege Local Government Legislative Arm, explaining that his health condition had significantly affected his ability to perform his official duties effectively.
The legislative house, while acknowledging Mr. Azeez Disco’s dedication to public service, swiftly accepted his decision. After deliberation, a unanimous resolution was passed, approving his resignation with immediate effect.
In its statement, the council commended the outgoing chairman for his contributions to the development of Agege and wished him well in his future endeavours. The incident, observers noted, underscores the importance of public officials prioritising their personal health and well-being.
Following his exit, Mr. Ganiyu Obasa, the Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government and son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, is expected to take charge of the council’s affairs.
Meanwhile, political tensions have continued to simmer in Agege. In May, some residents, under the aegis of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) for Agege and Orile-Agege, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the local government’s political affairs.
The group alleged that Speaker Obasa was attempting to impose his loyalists as candidates for the forthcoming local government and councillorship elections. At a meeting convened to protest the announcement of the purported candidates for both Agege Local Government and Orile-Agege LCDA, the residents described the process as undemocratic and exclusionary.
Addressing journalists, Mr. Kamardeen Sabitu, Chairman of the PCC for Agege and Orile-Agege, accused Obasa of manipulating the political structure in the area for personal benefit.
During the demonstration, protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “Red Card, Obasa O to ge (It is Enough)” and chanted solidarity songs like “Enough is Enough, this suffering is enough, Tinubu rescue us.”
Sabitu lamented that Agege residents have long suffered political marginalisation under Obasa’s dominance, recalling that similar protests in 2018 led to the death of one demonstrator and the imprisonment of 11 others.
“There is no true democracy in Agege. Since 2018, we’ve been resisting Obasa’s control. We salute everyone standing up to this political imposition. One person cannot dominate Agege politics,” Sabitu declared.
He reaffirmed that while the group remains loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and appreciative of its leadership, they would not accept imposed candidates without due consultation and internal democracy.
