Whitney Adeniran Case: Pathologist Confirms Death Cause in Court

Whitney Adeniran Case: Pathologist Confirms Death Cause in Court

…Rules Out Pre-existing Health Conditions

A pathologist, Dr. Sanni Daniel, on Friday testified on the cause of death in the ongoing coroner’s inquest into the tragic demise of Miss Desola Whitney Adeniran.

The case is being heard at the Magistrates’ Court in Ikeja, with the Suit No. MCIK/CONA/1/2023, over the death of the late student of Chrisland Schools.

In his testimony, Dr. Daniel stated that a comprehensive autopsy had been conducted, with results clearly indicating asphyxia due to electrocution as the cause of death.

He categorically ruled out any pre-existing health conditions or adverse reactions to antidepressants or other medications.

Dr. Daniel based his findings on various physiological indicators observed during the autopsy, including marked fluidity of blood, grazed abrasion on the back of the right forearm, subpleural petechial haemorrhages in the brain, and electric burn injury on the right knee.

His testimony also highlighted additional indicators such as bilateral conjunctival petechiae, evidence of shock in the kidneys, and cerebral oedema. Other significant findings documented in the autopsy report further bolstered this conclusion.

The pathologist was subsequently examined by counsel for the family, Mr. Oluwatodimu Ige, and counsel for the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Mr. Abimbola Ojenike.

The proceedings were centred on the presentation of expert medical evidence concerning the cause of death of the late Whitney.

Representing the deceased’s family were legal counsel Oluwatodimu Ige, alongside Obiechina Justin and Oluwabusayomi Gbadegesin.

The Lagos State Attorney General’s office was represented by Araba, while Abimbola Ojenike and Oluwadamilola Omotosho appeared on behalf of the FCCPC.

Notably, Chrisland Schools and Mr. Ademoye Adewale, the vendor allegedly linked to the incident, were absent from the hearing despite formal notices being served to all relevant parties.

Following the proceedings, the court adjourned the matter to 8 August 2025, to facilitate the cross-examination of Dr. Daniel by the defendants’ counsel, including representatives for Chrisland Schools and the vendor.

The coroner’s inquest continues as the public awaits full accountability in a case that has raised widespread concerns regarding school safety and the enforcement of duty of care in educational institutions.
