PDP Govs, Wike, Others Meet In Abuja

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are currently meeting with senior party leaders at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja.

The meeting, convened by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has drawn key figures, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Among the governors in attendance are Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Peter Mbah (Enugu). Also present are several former governors, including Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Achike Udenwa (Imo), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

Party leadership is also well represented, with the Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, former Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi, and other members of the PDP National Working Committee in attendance.

Though the agenda of the meeting was not disclosed to journalists, it marks the party’s second major gathering this year and the first since Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his cabinet defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP has been grappling with deepening internal divisions since the 2023 general elections. Tensions escalated with the ongoing rift between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now a minister in the APC-led federal government.

Despite repeated interventions by the party’s leadership bodies—including the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, National Executive Committee, and the PDP Governors’ Forum—the internal disputes remain unresolved.

The April 23 defection of Delta State officials, including former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, to the APC further worsened the situation. Several National Assembly members have also left the PDP, including three senators from Kebbi State—Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South)—who joined the APC following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

The growing wave of defections has fueled concerns within the PDP over an alleged attempt by the ruling party to create a one-party state.
