Uniport Demands Probe Into Alleged Killing Of Student By Security Operative
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has called for a full investigation into the death of Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student, who was allegedly shot and killed by a security operative in an off-campus incident.
In a statement released on Sunday, Dr. Sam Kpenu, Head of Information, Publications and Public Relations, expressed the university’s deep sorrow over the tragic loss.
“Although the incident occurred outside the campus, Godwin was a valued member of our academic community. The University is working closely with security agencies to uncover the full circumstances surrounding his death,” the statement read.
UniPort emphasized the need for a thorough, transparent investigation, urging security authorities to act in accordance with justice and the rule of law.
The university also called on students and staff to remain calm and allow the investigative process to proceed without disruption.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” Dr. Kpenu said.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of all members of its community, promising to take all necessary steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“May the soul of our dearly departed student rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
As of the time of this report, the Rivers State Police Command has not issued an official response regarding the incident.
