The Ogun State House of Assembly has approved the extension of the tenure of Local Government Transition Committees for a period of three months, with effect from 18th April, 2020.

The approval followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader and member representing Ado-Odo/Ota I State Constituency, Yusuf Sherif, seconded by his Ado-Odo/Ota II Counterpart, Lamidi Musefiu and supported by other lawmakers through a voice vote.

It would be recalled that the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo had during the previous plenary acknowledged Governor Dapo Abiodun’s correspondence requesting for a three- month extension considering the fact that local government election had not been conducted due to prevailing circumstances, which made the extension expedient with a view to averting the creation of vacuum in the running of the Local Government Councils in the State.

Similarly, the Assembly unanimously passed a resolution requesting all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of Government as well as Parastatals to submit their records of activities including revenue heads, projects implemented and contracts awarded amongst others to the Assembly on or before Wednesday, 3rd of June, 2020 to enable the lawmakers conduct their annual oversight function on MDAs in the State.

The Assembly’s resolution was sequel to a motion moved by the Majority Leader , Sherif, seconded by the Minority Leader, Ganiyu Oyedeji with the support of other lawmakers via a voice vote.

In another development, the Assembly has lauded operatives of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) for their professional ingenuity being displayed in the cause of their duties across the State, with a charge on them to put in place mechanisms towards ensuring a more safe motoring on the Abeokuta/Sagamu Highway and other roads in the State to avert road crashes.

Oluomo made the remarks while responding to the submissions of members representing Ijebu-East and Sagamu II State Constitutuencies, Honourables Isaac Adams and Adeniran Ademola, who reported the reckless attitudes of some of the drivers of heavy duty vehicles on the road and sought for the fixture of reflective signals on trucks plying highways at night and the need to use caution signs when parking along the roads.

The Speaker tasked the officials of TRACE to redouble their efforts at apprehending erring truck drivers with a view to maintaining sanity on the highways within the State.

The Speaker equally appealed to Governor Abiodun to further engage the top hierarchy of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) with a view to resolving the illegal arrest and harassment of some law abiding citizens and residents of border towns in the State.

Oluomo made the appeal in his response to the member representing Yewa North I State Constituency, Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju who decried the unprofessional discharge of duty by some operatives of the NCS who often misfire arms on the people under the guise of chasing smugglers in border towns.

The Speaker appealed to the residents of the affected communities to be law abiding and remain peaceful, saying peace and tranquility were essential to societal development.
