NFSC Urges Positivity Ahead Nigeria’s 65th Anniversary, To Induct 60 New Members

Nigeria prepares to mark its 65th Independence anniversary, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC) has called on citizens to unite, embrace patriotism, and contribute positively to nation building, stressing that unity of purpose remains the only way to overcome the country’s challenges.

Founded in 1955, the NFSC, regarded as the oldest and foremost supporters’ club in Africa, has built a reputation as a strong pillar for promoting Nigeria’s image and unity through football.

Ahead of the October 1 celebration, the Club announced a line-up of activities, including an Independence Day Walk around Surulere, the National Stadium, and Ojuelegba areas of Lagos. The events will culminate in a grand party at its Funsho Williams Avenue headquarters, where about 60 new members will be formally inducted.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos on Thursday, NFSC National Chairman, Reverend Samuel Ikpea, urged Nigerians to rally behind the country despite the present difficulties.

“As a group known for uniting Nigerians through our unwavering football support, the NFSC is calling on all Nigerians to rally round the nation. Nigeria will on October 1st mark 65 years of independence, and we must stand together to support our own,” Ikpea said.

He emphasized that patriotism and positive contributions at every level were crucial.

“Though the nation grapples with challenges, the best we can do is to get involved mentally and practically by projecting Nigeria positively and making meaningful contributions in our little corners. Building a nation requires collective effort. While constructive criticism is healthy, mere condemnation and lamentations will not help. We must all unite mentally and physically to build Nigeria,” he added.

Ikpea referenced the Federal Government’s chosen theme for the anniversary, “Nigeria @65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” describing it as apt and reflective of current realities.

“This theme is a reminder that we must all put aside differences and work together—government, private sector, civil society, sports stakeholders, and citizens—to forge a Nigeria of peace, prosperity and progress,” he said.

 

The NFSC Chairman disclosed that beyond the symbolic Independence Walk, the club’s celebrations will also host some sports icons and ex-footballers who have played significant roles in promoting national unity.

“After the walk, we will host a grand anniversary party at our Surulere office. It will be a gathering of NFSC members, sports legends, and well-wishers. Importantly, we will also induct about 60 new members as part of our drive to strengthen the NFSC family and expand our mission of promoting Nigeria through sports,” Ikpea stated.

He stressed that the anniversary should serve as a reflection point for all Nigerians to recommit to the collective project of building a greater nation.
