NBA Demands Justice Over Killing Of Port Harcourt Lawyer

THECONSCIENCE  NG reports that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the killing of one of its members, Bright Nda Owhor, who was reportedly murdered in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on July 5, 2025.

NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, in a statement released via his official X handle on Sunday, expressed outrage over the tragic incident, describing it as “senseless and brutal” and demanded immediate justice.

“Bright Nda Owhor was a promising young legal practitioner whose life was cut short in a most senseless and brutal manner. His untimely death is not just a painful loss to his family and colleagues, but also a stark reminder of the deepening insecurity that continues to plague our society,” Osigwe said.

“The NBA unequivocally condemns this heinous act. No society that claims to be governed by law and order can tolerate the unchecked violence and impunity that such killings represent. The right to life is the most fundamental of all rights, and its violation in such cruel fashion is unacceptable under any circumstances,” he added.

Calling for accountability, the NBA urged the Inspector-General of Police, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, and all relevant security agencies to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding Owhor’s death.

“We demand that the perpetrators be identified, apprehended, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done, and swiftly too,” Osigwe said.

The NBA also expressed concern over rising insecurity in the country, warning that legal professionals cannot continue to serve society under the threat of violence and death.

“We urge the relevant authorities to take concrete steps to address the rising tide of insecurity affecting both citizens and legal professionals across the country,” the NBA president stated.

The association extended its condolences to the family of the deceased, the Port Harcourt branch of the NBA, and the entire legal community while vowing to closely monitor the case until justice is served.

“The NBA will not relent in pursuing justice for our slain colleague,” Osigwe assured.
