Maritime Journalists Unveil NNMJ, Seek Stakeholders’ Support
The Network of Nigerian Maritime Journalists (NNMJ) has been formally unveiled as a coalition of all maritime journalists’ beat associations in Nigeria, with a pledge to foster unity and strengthen the profession.
According to a joint statement signed by Elder Dele Aderibigbe, Chairman, and Jerry Aguigbo, Public Relations Officer, the new umbrella body draws membership from all existing groups including the League of Maritime Editors (LEAGUE), Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), Maritime Journalists’ Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Online Media Association of Nigeria (OMAN), and the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP), as well as independent journalists.
“The coalition has become very necessary to further foster unity among journalists covering the maritime industry. We believe cohesion under a stronger umbrella body will better the lot of all journalists,” the statement read.
The NNMJ appealed for collaboration with journalists, government agencies, parastatals, and maritime stakeholders to make the process a success.
“In due course, we shall announce our programmes and expect all maritime journalists to key into them for seamless coverage of the industry. We are determined to ensure that maritime journalists are no longer less regarded, nor treated like orphans as they seem to have become in recent times, ” it added.
The group expressed appreciation to practitioners and supporters of the initiative, pledging to uphold professionalism and fair representation in industry reportage.
