The popular Ilupesi Event Centre in Isale-Eko, Lagos, came alive on Thursday December 19, with excitement and anticipation as residents gathered for an occasion that promised to uplift the community.

Prince Taiwo Oyekan, the Deputy Leader of the Lagos Island Local Government Legislative Arm, was set to unveil his latest initiative: a Mega Plus Economic Empowerment programme aimed at providing financial relief and support to the less privileged.

For Oyekan, this was not just another event; it was the culmination of years of dedication to improving the lives of his constituents.

Having previously distributed 5 million naira, then 10 million naira, and now a remarkable 20 million naira, his commitment to financial empowerment has become a hallmark of his leadership.

This latest initiative, with its generous disbursement of funds, aimed to bring hope and tangible support to the most vulnerable members of society.

As the event commenced, the atmosphere was electric. The venue was packed with widows, elderly citizens, petty traders, artisans, technicians, and physically challenged individuals, all eager to receive the assistance that could change their lives. The disbursement of the twenty million naira (N20 million) was a moment of joy and relief for many, with each beneficiary representing a story of struggle and resilience in the face of economic difficulties.

In addition to the 20 million naira financial support, the event featured the distribution of essential goods, including 5kg bags of rice and filled gas cylinders. These provisions were a much-needed lifeline for families and petty traders grappling with rising living costs, showcasing Oyekan’s deep understanding of the challenges his constituents face daily.

The event also highlighted Oyekan’s commitment to community safety and education. A mini-bus patrol vehicle was presented to the Nigeria Police Force, Ebute Ero division, enhancing security in the area. Furthermore, two school mini buses were donated to facilitate free transportation for students, ensuring that access to education was no longer hindered by logistical challenges.

Two beneficiaries also got all-expense paid trips to Jerusalem.

Among the notable attendees were the Chairman of Lagos State Governor Advisory Council, GAC, Chief Tajudeen Olusi; Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Oba of Lagos (well represented), eminent monarchs in Lagos, Divisional Police Officer, Nollywood actors, Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) State Chairman, Chief Cornelius Ojelabi represented by his deputy, Hon Moshood Mayegun, APC wards and local council officers, as well as various religious and traditional leaders.

Their presence underscored the significance of Oyekan’s work and the respect he commands within the community. Prominent political leaders from Lagos Island also joined the celebration, affirming their support for Oyekan’s vision of a better Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed the Governor’s delight at Oyekan’s contributions to community development and leadership.

“Lagos island Is the heart of commercial activities and hub of rich cultural heritage. However, for any community to thrive, it’s people must be empowered to thrive economically and socially, and the environment must be secured. Today, we are witnessing a programme that aligns with our administration’s commitment to leading Lagos that works for everyone, ” the Governor said.

This empowerment programme not just an economic gesture but an investment in the future of our people to empower traders, small businesses, individuals and entrepreneurs. This will ensure that individuals can rise above economic challenges and contribute meaningfully to our collective properity.

In his remarks, Pa Olusi went down memory lane, narrating how late Oba Oyekan loved politics and service to humanity.

He expressed joy about the young Oyekan’s demonstrated commitment to contribute meaningfully to Lagos island.

“I am glad our son is the one who is doing this today. He’s a son to my late brother, Kola Oyekan. I was quite close to late Oba Oyekan. And he was interested in leadership and politics. Today his grandson is representing well. I’m sure he will be glad and proud of him. We are happy and I urge him to continue,” Olusi noted.

Hon Mayegun also applauded Oyekan for his efforts and his growth in leadership and urged all party faithfuls to attend all meetings and events ensure their PVC voters card is intact.

In his remarks, Oyekan thanked all his supporters and leaders in Lagos for honouring him with their presence especially on day that even the Governor is also holding a programme as well as a Senator. He expressed joy to be a part of a government that is demonstrating commitment to development and people. He noted that the Mega Empowerment programme is a pilot project as the two buses, for example, will become five later, to assist under privileged school children with easy commuting from to and from school and for all the other donations, he pledged to do more.

Their prayers for his continued success resonated throughout the venue, a testament to the hope he inspires in the community.

Adetoun Ajasa, one of the two Jerusalem pilgrimage beneficiaries said she never imagined she could be blessed with the trip but Taiwo Oyekan has made it possible. She prayed God to spare his life to continue his great works in Lagos.

“Honourable Taiwo Oyekan’s Mega Plus Economic Empowerment initiative is more than just a financial programme; it is a beacon of hope for the residents of Lagos Island. Through his unwavering dedication and compassionate leadership, he is not only making life easier for many but he’s also fostering a sense of community and solidarity among the people he serves,” said Lawal Hakeem, another beneficiary.
