Unending Drama over Kano Emirate Tussle As Gov Yusuf Insists on Sanusi Despite Court Order

There appears to be no end in sight to the continued drama over the lingering Kano Emirate tussle.

While the latest court order favours dethroned Emir Ado Bayero, the state Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has vowed to retain Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir.

He insisted the move was to protect the centuries-long tradition of a single undivided Emirate in Kano which predates Nigeria.

Sunusi Bature, spokesman of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, added that the ongoing emirate tussle is a fight to finish.

Bature said this when he featured on an Arise TV programme.

Acknowledging the 15th Emir as a well respected person who is entitled to privileges as an indigene of the state, he said his actions did not match his personality.

He said, “Aminu Bayero is an indigene of Kano, well respected and we don’t want anything to happen to him. He is not under any pressure to leave the state. As a very important personality, he has the right to move anywhere.

“The police have taken side at the moment and they seem not to be taking orders from the Governor.

“First of all, when Aminu arrived at midnight at a time when he and his family vacated the main palace, they took all their belongings from the main palace but he was convinced by some unpatriotic politicians to return to Kano and give a fight.

“For us, it’s a fight to finish because the Governor has the right to dethrone Emir, to reappoint Emir, to appoint a new emir or reinstate. He has the constitutional right and nobody can take that from him. Even if it will take us 100 years the governor has that exclusive right to depose or appoint a new emir.”

The battle for power and control over the Kano Emirate has not only caused division within the state but has also ignited debates across the country.

The dispute raises questions about the relationship between traditional institutions and political power, as well as the adherence to legal processes and court rulings.

As the drama unfolds, the nation awaits the outcome of this protracted conflict. Will Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf succeed in his fight to retain Emir Sanusi Lamido II, or will the court order prevail, resulting in the installation of Emir Ado Bayero? Only time will reveal the resolution of this enduring saga. In the meantime, the people of Kano and the rest of the nation hope for a peaceful and just conclusion to this tense and divisive situation.

The Kano Emirate tussle continues to be embroiled in an unending drama, as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State stands firm in his determination to retain Emir Sanusi Lamido II as the Emir, despite a court order favoring Emir Ado Bayero. The crisis was ignited by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who utilized a law to depose Sanusi and divide the longstanding Kano Emirate into five separate areas, each with its own Emir.

The dispute has created a wave of controversy and tensions within the region, attracting national attention. On one side, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf adamantly supports Emir Sanusi Lamido II, arguing that his removal was unjust and politically motivated. The governor is resolute in his fight to retain Sanusi as the Emir, going against the court order that favors Emir Ado Bayero.

Former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s decision to remove Sanusi and divide the Kano Emirate has been met with mixed reactions. Supporters of the division believe it will lead to more efficient governance and development, while critics argue that it undermines the authority and historical significance of the Emirate.
