IGP Disu Orders Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Over Delta Killing
The Inspector-General of Police,Tunji Disu, has ordered the dismissal of officers implicated in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as a serious breach of police rules and human rights.
Speaking at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP Disu confirmed that officers involved in the killing of 28 year old Mene Ogidi on April 26, 2026, have been recommended for dismissal following the conclusion of an internal disciplinary process.
He said the recommendation has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final approval, after which the affected officers will face criminal prosecution.
The move follows widespread public outrage after details of the incident surfaced online, reigniting concerns over extrajudicial killings and police brutality.
According to IGP Disu, the principal officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, along with other personnel linked to the case, was transferred from Delta State Command to Abuja to ensure an impartial investigation.
The Force Disciplinary Committee subsequently found them culpable after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“Their actions were in direct violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedures guiding the use of firearms,” the IGP said, stressing that lethal force must only be applied as a last resort and within the law.
He added that two Superintendents of Police faced the disciplinary panel, while three Inspectors underwent orderly room trials, all resulting in recommendations for dismissal.
The IGP extended condolences to the victim’s family, describing the killing as avoidable. “This tragic incident does not reflect the values of the Force,” he said.
The case has sparked renewed calls for police reform, with civil society groups demanding accountability and warning that failure to ensure justice could further weaken public trust.
Reaffirming the Force’s stance against impunity, Disu assured Nigerians that officers who abuse their authority will be held accountable. He also urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the legal process unfolds.
