FG Adopts TASUED As Federal University

Federal Government Adopts Tai Solarin University of Education as Federal Institution

THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the Federal Government has officially adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, making it a Federal University.

President Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday and expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the institution, which is considered one of the state’s most valuable educational assets.

This decision was announced in a statement released by the Presidency on Sunday.

“It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated much of his life to educating our children and imparting patriotic and leadership values at Mayflower School in Ikenne,” President Tinubu was quoted as saying.

“It also honors the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a crucial role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment,” he added.

President Tinubu highlighted that the transition of TASUED into a Federal University of Education aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and improving the quality of instruction across all educational levels. With its well-developed infrastructure and academic programs, the transition is expected to require minimal federal investment.

Founded in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialized university of education. Named after the late Dr. Tai Solarin, a renowned activist and founder of Mayflower School in Ikenne, TASUED will now become the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East Senatorial District.

Both Awolowo and Solarin were celebrated figures from the Eastern Senatorial District of Ogun State, which includes the Ijebu and Remo regions.

With this new status, the Federal Government now oversees three universities of education: Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo.
