Army Arrests 12 Suspected Terrorists in Kwara
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the Nigerian Army has arrested 12 individuals linked to terrorist activities carried out by Mahmuda, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram, which had occupied parts of the Kanji Lake National Park.
The group was allegedly responsible for terrorizing residents in border communities across Baruten and Kaiama local government areas of Kwara State, as well as Borgu in Niger State.
Major General Obinna Onubogu, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, disclosed the arrests during a visit to troops stationed in Kaiama and Baruten, Kwara State. He said the suspects were apprehended at various locations during military raids targeting the insurgents’ hideouts.
According to the GOC, two of the suspects are confirmed members of the armed group, while the others are believed to be accomplices. He noted that the ongoing counterinsurgency operation, code-named Park Strike Four, aims to eliminate criminal elements from the park and surrounding areas.
“The troops have successfully cleared at least 90 kilometers from Kemanji into the Kanji Forest, where a firm base is now established,” Onubogu stated. He added that the operation has already achieved key objectives, including dislodging the militants.
During his visit, the GOC also met with local leaders, including the Emir of Kaiama, Alhaji Muazu Sheu Omar, and the Head of the Kemanji community, Shao’ki Aliyu Siki-Muhammed. He assured them of continued military efforts to restore peace and security.
The operation follows a one-month directive from the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, to clear the area of bandits and insurgents.
