Legendary James Bond Actor, Sir Thomas Sean Connery has passed on at the ripe age of 90 after nine decades of an adventurous and eventful life, leaving action and adventure movie buffs sad and mourning.

Famed for the 007 James Bond fictional British spy character, the Scottish movie icon globally adored was knighted in 2000 by the Queen of England after two previous nominations.

The actor “died peacefully in his sleep,” publicist Nancy Seltzer said in a statement Saturday.

“His wife Micheline and his two sons, Jason and Stephane have confirmed that he died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family. There will be a private ceremony followed by a memorial yet to be planned once the virus has ended,” the statement said.

Connery, who was awarded a knighthood in 2000 for his contribution to the arts, played the British spy in seven movies, between 1962 and1983, beginning with “Dr. No” in 1962, the first of the highly successful James Bond movies.

The Scottish actor who was born on the 25 August 1930 at the Fountainbridge, Edinburgh,  Scotland took his final bow on 31 October 2020 at Nassau, The Bahamas.

James Bond, the smooth lover boy detective character with a rough charm on ladies has come to be synonymous with Sir Sean Connery who expressed reservations at some point in his life insisting he was more than just James Bond. But fans all over the world would have none of that talk.

The eventful and colourful life of Sir Connery saw him joining the Royal Navy at 16 years but got discharged after three years as an Able Seaman owing to an hereditory duodenal ulcer though Connery’s first job was as a milkman in Edinburgh.

Afterwards, he returned to the co-op, then worked as, among other things, a lorry driver, a lifeguard at Portobello swimming baths, a labourer, and  later as an artist’s model for the Edinburgh College of Art.

His foray into acting kicked off in smaller theatre and television productions until his breakout role as the iconic James Bond, a role that  become synonymous with his person till his last days.

Connery also tried bodybuilding at the age of 18, and from 1951 trained heavily with Ellington, a former gym instructor in the British Army. He also later became a keen footballer but acting later played out so obviously as his one true calling.

He later featured more as a mentor character in the twilight of his glorious days, including as Father to Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones movies.

The iconic James Bond lady’s man was never without laurels with some key ones eternally to his credits.

In 2004, Connery was polled in the Sunday Herald as “The Greatest Living Scot” and in a 2011 EuroMillions survey as “Scotland’s Greatest Living National Treasure”.

He was voted by People magazine as the “Sexiest Man Alive” in 1989 and the “Sexiest Man of the Century” in 1999.

His achievements in film were recognised with an Academy Award, two BAFTA Awards (including the BAFTA Fellowship), and three Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award and a Henrietta Award. In 1987 he was made a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters in France, and he received the US Kennedy Center Honors lifetime achievement award in 1999. Connery was knighted in the 2000 New Year Honours for services to film drama.

Sean Connery’s image obscured his work ethic and versatility

Connery officially retired from acting in 2006, although he briefly returned for voice over roles in 2012 before he breathed his last at Nassau, The Bahamas last Saturday in his sleep.
