(POLITICAL ANALYSIS) ADC and Atiku’s Road to Aso Rock: How the Former VP Could Defy the Odds in 2027

By Bolaji Israel

Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election slated for January presents Alhaji Atiku Abubakar with another opportunity to pursue his long-standing ambition of becoming president on the rising African Democratic Congress (ADC) party platform. But unlike a conventional contest built around political experience and party structures, the coming election will test his ability to navigate a fragmented opposition, an incumbent with the advantages of office, and a electorate increasingly concerned about economic survival, security and the future of the country.

Atiku’s path to Aso Rock is neither straightforward nor guaranteed. Yet the political circumstances surrounding the election offer several possibilities through which the former vice-president could mount a formidable challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The question is not simply whether Atiku can win, but how he might overcome the obstacles standing between him and the presidency.

The economy as a referendum on Tinubu

Atiku’s first opportunity lies in the possibility that the 2027 election will become a referendum on the Tinubu administration’s economic record.

For millions of Nigerians, the ultimate measure of governance is the cost of food, transportation, housing, healthcare and education, alongside the availability of jobs and opportunities for businesses to thrive.

Although the Federal Government has defended its reforms as necessary for long-term economic recovery, the immediate burden on households has made economic management a central political issue.

Atiku has already sought to frame the election around the administration’s record, describing the contest as a referendum on Tinubu’s performance. His campaign has also presented economic recovery, electoral reform and governance as central themes.

If voters conclude that their economic circumstances have not improved sufficiently by election day, dissatisfaction could translate into demand for a change of government. However, that outcome would depend on whether Atiku can convince Nigerians that his proposed alternatives are practical, affordable and capable of producing better results.

The opportunity, therefore, lies not merely in criticising Tinubu’s policies but in offering a convincing alternative.

The opposition vote and the lessons of 2023

The 2023 election offers one of the clearest lessons for Atiku’s 2027 ambition: a substantial national following does not automatically translate into victory when opposition support is divided.

Atiku finished second in 2023, while Peter Obi and other challengers attracted significant votes from different constituencies. President Tinubu emerged victorious in a contest in which no single opposition candidate consolidated the votes cast against the ruling party.

The political landscape has since changed. Atiku is contesting under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Obi is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate. Atiku’s running mate is former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi. The Independent National Electoral Commission’s published list identifies Tinubu, Atiku and Obi among the candidates for the January 2027 election.

This configuration creates both an obstacle and a strategic question for Atiku: can he broaden his coalition of support without necessarily securing a single opposition candidate?

A formal merger or joint ticket may no longer be the only conceivable route. Opposition parties could explore cooperation on electoral transparency, voter education, election monitoring and other shared democratic priorities. They could also seek to reduce unnecessary competition in constituencies where cooperation is possible.

Nevertheless, such arrangements would not automatically transfer voters from one candidate to another. Each opposition constituency has its own priorities, loyalties and expectations.

Atiku’s political network and the Amaechi factor

Atiku’s years in national politics provide him with name recognition, established relationships and experience in presidential campaigning. His challenge is to convert these advantages into an effective national organisation capable of mobilising voters beyond his traditional political base.

Amaechi’s presence on the ticket adds another experienced political figure with a background in governance and party organisation. His participation could broaden the campaign’s engagement with political stakeholders, particularly in the South-South and other parts of the country where his political relationships may be useful.

But political experience and elite alliances must ultimately produce measurable electoral support. The campaign would need to demonstrate a capacity to reach younger voters, urban communities, small businesses, organised labour, professionals and citizens who may be dissatisfied with the existing political order but remain unconvinced by the alternatives.

Winning beyond traditional strongholds

Nigeria’s presidential elections require a national approach. A candidate must secure the highest number of valid votes while also meeting the constitutional requirement for geographical distribution of support.

Atiku would therefore need to consolidate his appeal in the North-East and compete effectively across the wider North, while expanding his reach in the North-Central, South-South, South-East and South-West.

The South-West presents a particularly important challenge because Tinubu has a longstanding political base there. In the South-East and South-South, Atiku would have to compete with other opposition candidates and demonstrate that his programme addresses the interests of those constituencies.

His campaign’s prospects would consequently depend on its ability to build a genuinely nationwide coalition rather than assume that regional identity, political history or dissatisfaction with the government will automatically deliver votes.

The burden of credibility and a changing electorate

Atiku must also address questions about political continuity, repeated presidential bids and whether his leadership offers a sufficiently compelling response to demands for change.

His experience as a former vice-president is an asset in terms of familiarity with national governance, but it also invites scrutiny of his policy record and proposals.

A credible campaign would need to articulate clear positions on insecurity, unemployment, public debt, electricity, education, healthcare and the cost of living. It would also need to explain how its policies would be financed and implemented.

Equally important would be a clear commitment to peaceful campaigning, credible elections and respect for the electorate’s decision.

The road ahead

Atiku’s route to Aso Rock could emerge from the convergence of several circumstances: widespread dissatisfaction with the incumbent, a persuasive economic programme, effective party mobilisation, stronger cooperation among opposition forces and an ability to win support across regional boundaries.

None of these conditions is assured. The APC retains the advantages of incumbency, while the opposition remains divided among competing political platforms and ambitions.

Yet the 2027 contest will not be determined by political experience or party machinery alone. Voters will also judge the economy, security, governance and the credibility of competing promises.

For Atiku, the challenge is to transform his long experience in national politics into a persuasive case for change. Whether that case attracts the breadth of support required for victory will depend on the campaign he builds, the choices voters make and the credibility of the electoral process.
