Rotary Club Launches Vision, Hearing Screening for Public School Pupils in Lagos
The Rotary Club of Ikoyi, in collaboration with Rotary International District 9112 and partner organisations, has launched a vision and hearing screening programme for public primary school pupils in Lagos State to promote early detection and treatment of preventable impairments.
THECONSCIENCE NG reports that the programme, flagged off on July 6 at Obalende Primary School, Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, is being implemented under a Rotary Global Grant with support from the District Designated Fund (DDF) and strategic partners.
The initiative aims to identify vision and hearing challenges among pupils at an early stage and provide follow-up interventions, including prescription eyeglasses, hearing aids, medications and corrective surgeries for children who require them.
In the first phase, more than 350 pupils from 10 public primary schools in the Ikoyi-Obalende Local Council Development Area (LCDA) were screened. Rotary International District 9112 said it plans to extend the programme to about 50,000 public primary school pupils across Lagos State.
The launch was attended by government officials, education stakeholders, healthcare professionals, Rotary leaders and development partners.
Speaking at the event, the District Governor of Rotary International District 9112, Layi Abidoye, said children diagnosed with serious hearing or vision impairments would receive the medical care required, including corrective surgeries where necessary.
He said the programme, which currently focuses on public primary schools, would be expanded across Lagos State in line with Rotary International’s commitment to sustainable community service.
The President of the Rotary Club of Ikoyi, Christopher Ehiogie, described the initiative as the club’s flagship service project for the 2026/2027 Rotary year. He said the project aligns with Rotary International’s focus on basic education and literacy, maternal and child health, and disease prevention and treatment.

Also speaking, the Assistant Governor and Primary Contact for the Global Grant Project, Basirat Giwa, said the district intends to screen 50,000 pupils and provide treatment for children found to have hearing or vision impairments.
She added that another phase of the programme is planned for the next academic session and urged governments at all levels to sustain the initiative after Rotary’s intervention.
The Supervisor for Education, Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, Funlola Adedayo, commended the Rotary Club of Ikoyi and Rotary International District 9112 for bringing the programme to the council area and expressed hope for continued collaboration on education and healthcare initiatives.
Partnering clubs include the Rotary Club of Ikoyi Metro, Rotary Club of Gbagada, Rotary Club of Agege, Rotary Club of Ota, Rotary Club of Yeovil (United Kingdom), Rotary Club of Guildford Wey (United Kingdom) and Rotary Club of Brookhaven, Atlanta, United States.
